Harry Potter and the Super Bowl Breach: Part 1

article-1213793-06722D4C000005DC-590_634x718I decided to split this fan fiction into two parts for review, simply because the story lent itself to it and the second half of the story is vastly different than the first.  This review covers Chapters 1-50.

Summary: Set in the style of “updates,” this is a rendition of what would have happened should Harry Potter been filmed flying over the Thames in 1996 (Book 5) while an American company was filming a Super Bowl Commercial. The Statue of Secrecy is no more and Muggles are integrating with wizards. This is an explanation of what would happen if magic meets technology, wizards meet religion, and politics meets a “gifted power,” with a little bit of Horcrux hunting as well.

Status: Good

Opinion: This is a very decent integration of the Muggle and Magical worlds, with very realistic interactions, mostly between college age students (of course they are the ones to feel comfortable first). It is very descriptive, with fairly well-rounded character in the “vignettes” with a few camio appearances. However, I do feel that the recurring characters do not evolve as well as they should have. There are no relationships other than pre-existing ones, not much is expanded on here either. This is a very American-centric story, Hogwarts/Voldemort should up maybe once every four or five updates. The one thing that I struggled with during the whole story was that there was a lot of bouncing around, it was hard to keep a time line of what was going on in what part of the world. The other major issue that I had was there were tensions and forms of technology that did not exist in 1996 that were being discussed like they were common place. Interesting read, but a little too long. The build-up of the World War III scenario between Al-Queda, Hamas, Israel, and the Koreas was very slow, to the point that it took 30-some chapters before I understood why the Koreas were in the story line in the first place.

Length: Very Long. Quite honestly the longest story in the completed folder. It is 100 chapters long, 500 “updates” long, and 1,040,515 words long.

Pairings: Canon pairings only, with several OC relationships

Warnings: There is a lot of religious talk on the Christian/Islamic/Jewish front. If you don’t like religious discussions, this is not for you.

Resolving a Misunderstanding

mcgonagalSummary: This fanfiction opens with Minerva McGonagall’s first year as a teacher as she is complaining to Poppy Pomfrey about Albus’ bad habits; Albus walks in during a particularly bad moment where Minerva states “Fuck Albus Dumbledore. And fuck his beard!”  The first part of the story is both Albus and Minerva reliving their student/teacher relationship and how it evolved into a friendship.  The story slowly builds and the reader realizes that Albus and Minerva actually do love each other, romantically.  Once they resolve their issues from the first chapter, Albus does end up courting Minerva. Set in multiple viewpoints.

Status: Good

Opinion: The story is definitely good, but very long. It takes quite a while to get through and at times, Minerva seems much younger than just a first year teacher with her Mastery.  The writing is simple, easy to understand, but not terribly descriptive. The slow build is very well done. There is interesting speculation on what Minerva’s family was like, and you do get to meet quite a lot of them throughout the story. I think the main reason that it seems so long is that the story does not have any action; it merely is the “a slice of life” story.  Most of the story seems to be the two fighting with themselves on if they want to tell the other their feelings, though there are a lot of good side stories. The epilogue seemed very unnecessary, though it did bring “Fuck his beard” to a new level.  The sexual encounters were very awkward and used words like “phallus,” there was also a lot of talking and no describing during the scenes as well.

Length: 141 chapters with 877,737 words (2nd longest in the category)

Pairings: Minerva McGonagall/Albus Dumbledore, several OC pairings

Warnings: While “Not Rated” on A03, this is a mature story with quite a bit erotic content near the end.

DAYDverse: Sluagh

9706a6c86f8dcf551c4da48cd6acba10As the second fan fiction in my filter blog, I am going to progress to the next logical choice: the sequel to Dumbledore’s Army: The Year of Darkness.

Summary: Sluagh is set in the future, roughly 5 years after the Battle of Hogwarts.  Neville has become an Auror temporarily until the next training class comes through and ready to be in the field.  There is someone named the “Sluagh” in Ireland who is killing other people for unknown reasons. They have good reason to believe that it is one of the “lieutenants” from Dumbledore’s Army.  Neville feels that it is his job to take care of his Army and finds himself in a world that he knows nothing about.

Status: Good

Opinion: The tale starts out very well, with a lot of interaction between Neville and the muggle world (namely Irish), however it does take a strange (even for the Harry Potter universe) turn into the severe supernatural, including inter dimensional travel and demons. The story doesn’t quite end the way that you expect it to either. While not as good as the first story in the Trilogy (third fan fiction still to be finished), it is still well-written, descriptive, and the characters stay consistent throughout (i.e. no out of character interactions). It still made me cry to say the least, but it almost feels like the second part of the story could be another fan fiction.

Length: Novel length with 28 chapters and 210,934 words.

Pairings: Neville/Hannah Abbott, Harry/Ginny, Susan Bones/Seamus Finnigan

Warnings: Similar to the first fan fiction, this is bloody, gory, a little scary (horror-wise) near the end, and has quite a lot of death.

Dumbledore’s Army: The Year of Darkness

Neville-Longbottom-neville-longbottom-22817808-600-449Summary: The first fanfiction that I would recommend would be called “Dumbledore’s Army: The Year of Darkness.” This is basically a tale of Neville’s transformation from lowest in class to general of the army in the Battle of Hogwarts. The author wrote the world more detailed and emotional than even J.K. Rowling. If you like her writing, you would love Thanfiction’s rendition of Neville’s 7th year. It really is a fantastic mix of bravery, growing up fast, loyalty, and love in the face of fire.

Status: Fantastic

Length: 25 chapters that are similar to Rowling’s length if not longer. This is a true novel length. Words: 247,715.

Pairings: Neville/Hannah Abbott, Susan Bones/Ernie McMillian

Warnings: Not for the faint of heart. Lots of blood, death, torture. Imagine the 7th Harry Potter book with the death toll being quadrupled.
