Somewhere in Time

thSummary: When Harry, Ginny, Draco, and Hermione are sent back in time by some unknown person, they find them stuck in 1945, along with Tom Riddle in his seventh year. They must learn to navigate the different world while attempting to not change the future too much while also trying to find their way back home. When Riddle takes an unusual interest in Hermione, the future is irreparably changed, especially when they find their way back to the year 2000 and then are promptly sent back.

Status: Good

Opinion: The time travel with four individuals worked very well for this story and lent itself to some entertaining and challenging moments. The relationship between Hermione and Tom let both of them stay themselves and in character.  The changes to the future were well meditated and even the charisma that was evidenced in Tom’s interactions as a teenager gave him must more depth without deviating from the original portrayal. The only strange aspect of the story was the introduction of Salazar Slytherin, though it did add some knowledge to the time travel itself.

Paying for His Pedestal

Cho-Chang-promo-pics-ravenclaw-28214458-1919-2560Summary: After the incident in the ministry, suddenly Harry Potter can do no wrong in the eyes of the wizarding world, which he avidly does not enjoy. He decides to do something just because he “shouldn’t” and rapes Cho Chang during the train ride to Hogwarts and continues to do so several times over the next few weeks. After a while, Cho and Harry find common ground and become each other’s sanity. It is only when Harry refuses to acknowledge the growing relationship and begins to date Ginny that it all becomes strained and they must decide who to choose in the end.

Status: Bad

Opinion: While the story was not difficult to follow and was easy to read, everything was highly sensationalized and over-dramatized. The repetition of phrases, words, and interactions made the entire story redundant and almost boring to read. Overall, the relationships were toxic and the sexual interactions were implausible. The decision to make the story focus on Cho Chang’s perception of the relationship rather than injecting some of Harry’s made the story a little flat and one-dimensional.

Length: 355.462 words

Pairings: Harry Potter/Cho Chang, Cho Chang/Cormac McLaggen, Harry Potter/Ginny Weasley

Warnings: non-con, rape, mature rating

It Was All Just a Game

05-old-colliery-yardSummary: When Draco devises a plan to distract Harry during the Triwizard Tournament by making Harry fall in love, it backfires and Draco soon discovers that he feels more for the Gryffindor than he believed. Over the next few years, Harry and Draco engage in a clandestine, secret relationship that ends tragically when Draco is forced to take the Dark Mark. Though they still are in love, the war takes a toll on them both, forcing them to decide what really matters in the end.

Status: Meh

Opinion: The relationship between Harry and Draco was not perfect, in fact, it was far away from a healthy relationship at first. The story progressed evenly, but the story felt stilted and forced, like the characters didn’t really believe in what was happening in the story. Yet when the war is over, the story almost completely deviates from what was happening before and all the sudden, the plot points from before didn’t matter to any of the characters. The dilemma that Draco faced after taking the Dark Mark was strong and the moral discussion that followed was good, but the reactions did not seem to add much strength at all.

What It Comes Down To

dante-refillable-leather-journal-15Summary: After Harry, Ron, and Hermione are captured by the Death Eaters while on the Horcrux Hunt, Harry is tortured and raped to his breaking point; allowing him to escape with all three of them alive and well. However, Ron and Hermione must now help Harry cope with the aftermaths of the torture while also trying to advance the hunt. While attempting to cope with his mental trauma, Harry begins a relationship with Ron and Hermione that allows him to reconnect with the outside world. After the war ended, they must learn how to navigate a “normal” world with the memories from their time alone.

Status: Fantastic

Opinion: Harry’s mental anguish after the highly detailed torture that he endured was well documented, extrapolated, and created. Even Ron and Hermione’s thoughts and feelings as they attempted to not only deal with their own trauma, but helping with Harry’s as well was well-handled. The relationship between the triad made sense as the story progressed and was not rushed. The story progressed along the same time line as the canonical story, just with the added kidnapping between the necklace and the cup. The end of the story concluded nicely with very little problems and it was hopeful after the long trudge that they all had to endure.

Pairings:  Harry Potter/Multiple Death Eaters, Harry Potter/Ron Weasley/Hermione Granger, Harry Potter/Draco Malfoy, Harry Potter/Ginny Weasley

The Hog’s Head

Hogs HeadSummary: After the defeat of Voldemort, Harry and Ginny rekindle their relationship; quickly discovering that their relationship seems to be going very easily. Ginny goes back to Hogwarts for her last year, while Harry decides that he would like to run the Hog’s Head in Hogsmeade, just to be closer to her. As not only Harry, but also Ginny is targeted, Harry finds himself entering the Auror program just to solve the mystery of who is behind the mysterious happenings in Hogsmeade.

Status: Good

Opinion: This story was well laid out with multiple suspense filled moments that made it seem like a mystery novel. The relationship between Harry and Ginny seemed rushed at first, but as the story progressed and the stressors changed, so too did the strength of the relationship. Their high level of connectiveness was also explain rather nicely in the end as well. The idea of Harry running away from anything regarding academics or the Auror program was a good one that lead to a lot of discussions.

Harry Potter: Made for Each Other

black bearTitle: Harry Potter: Made for Each Other

Summary: During the Battle for Hogwarts, Lucius Malfoy discovers that he has found his veela soulmate. When no one comes for him, he knows he will die in Azkaban without them, but then he is saved by the most unlikely of people: Harry Potter. The two of them must learn about each other and see behind the masks of what the wizarding world sees, while also adjusting to being veela. In the meantime, Molly and Ginny Weasley are struggling to come to terms with the fact that Harry will not be a Weasley, even going so far as to kidnap him. After dealing with the Weasley women, Harry learns that his life will never be normal and also what it means to have a family.

Status: Good

Opinion: A guilty pleasure fanfiction, this story is actually well handled. There is a lot of explicit sexual contact from three separate couples, as well as a lot of sweet moments as well. The relationship between Harry and Lucius is slightly underdeveloped at the beginning, but expands as the fanfiction evolves. Their explanation is that as soulmates, Harry and Lucius would have less fights and fit together easier. Pregnant Harry was amusing, but perhaps not all accurate as some of the symptoms of pregnancy seemed to be overblown. Overall the story was less about action and drama and more about life after the war itself.

Length: 390.801 words

Pairings: Lucius Malfoy/Harry Potter, Draco Malfoy/Twins, Severus Snape/Remus Lupin/Sirius Black

Warnings: explicit gay sex, veela, mpreg

Harry’s Second Chance

0b8497dbd7574300a57ea41e35ded53dSummary: When Harry de-ages himself to 6 or 7 years old after the defeat of Voldemort in his fourth year, Severus Snape is the one who takes him. Since Harry has no memories of his previous life, Snape and Harry have a chance to reconnect and start over. They must learn to live with each other and finding a family along the way in the most unusual of people; a woman they saved in Greece, a de-aged Albus, and a man named Lucky who has a complicated past all of his own.

Status: Meh

Opinion: The story had some decent elements regarding parenting and what kind of parent that Severus Snape would be without all of the complications in the way, however many of the relationship went very quickly with little prelude or build up. The complications in their lives seemed to be overcome very easily and with simple solutions. Even the idea of Snape adopting Harry seemed to go very quickly with little interference on anyone’s part. The only complication that seemed to stay with them was Echo’s problems with her ex-husband, but even those were overlooked at times.

Pairings: Draco Malfoy/Hermione Granger, Severus Snape/OC, Lucius Malfoy/OC

Warnings: Alternate universe, mild mention of child abuse

Moment by Moment

thSummary: Several years after Voldemort wins the war, the Ministry is banished to America. When Harry is requested to be sent back to Britain with a magical object, he knows that he’s signing up for his death. What he doesn’t realize is that the Dark Reign is going to keep him alive and torture him. Along the way, he discovers that not all is what is seems with the Heir, Draco, and they find love in their torture, and eventually escape. They must then deal with the aftermaths of their torture while trying to help the Resistance in their movement. Their relationship and power ends up being what defeats Voldemort in the end.

Status: Meh

Opinion: This fanfiction was compelling during the torture and healing afterwards, but during the attempt to take back over the wizarding world, the story became stagnant. The character growth in Harry was astounding, but he almost seemed too dependent during the aftermath. The relationship between Harry and Molly was nice, but seemed stilted. The sexual aspects of the story were not necessary and were almost hard to read. For so many words, the story could have been told in much less time.

Length: 395.957 words

Pairings: Harry Potter/Draco Malfoy, Ron Weasley/Hermione Granger

Warnings: Torture, rape

Never Alone

Ruby-7-1200x915Summary: When the Dursley household is destroyed during the summer, Harry is sent to leave with Severus Snape. He must learn what it means to trust an adult and other people to survive the summer. When Draco Malfoy joins them after his own mother’s death, Harry and him begin to create an unbreakable bond. This is slightly changed when Draco has temporary amnesia after a Death Eater attack. Harry shares all of the information about the Horcruxes with his new found family and even learns the price of self-sacrifice.

Status: Good

Opinion: The story premise was good and well-written, but the story itself was not very memorable. The relationship grew slowly enough to make them realistic, but there were not many moments where the characters were conflicted about anything, which made for a bland story. Ron’s reaction to Harry being friends with Draco and Snape was irrational and sudden, as was his reintroduction to the story. The Horcrux hunting seemed much less dramatic in this story as well, though the added information about Tom Riddle was interesting. There were a several major character deaths that happened that didn’t seem to affect the story all that much as well, which felt anti-climatic with their build-ups.

Length: 397.743 words

Pairings: Draco Malfoy/Harry Potter, Remus Lupin/Severus Snape, Hermione Granger/Ron Weasley

Warnings: Suicide mention, gory deaths
