Somewhere in Time

thSummary: When Harry, Ginny, Draco, and Hermione are sent back in time by some unknown person, they find them stuck in 1945, along with Tom Riddle in his seventh year. They must learn to navigate the different world while attempting to not change the future too much while also trying to find their way back home. When Riddle takes an unusual interest in Hermione, the future is irreparably changed, especially when they find their way back to the year 2000 and then are promptly sent back.

Status: Good

Opinion: The time travel with four individuals worked very well for this story and lent itself to some entertaining and challenging moments. The relationship between Hermione and Tom let both of them stay themselves and in character.  The changes to the future were well meditated and even the charisma that was evidenced in Tom’s interactions as a teenager gave him must more depth without deviating from the original portrayal. The only strange aspect of the story was the introduction of Salazar Slytherin, though it did add some knowledge to the time travel itself.

Length: 345.363 words

Pairings: Hermione Granger/Tom Riddle, Harry Potter/Ginny Weasley

Warnings: Slight non-con, torture, gore

It Was All Just a Game

05-old-colliery-yardSummary: When Draco devises a plan to distract Harry during the Triwizard Tournament by making Harry fall in love, it backfires and Draco soon discovers that he feels more for the Gryffindor than he believed. Over the next few years, Harry and Draco engage in a clandestine, secret relationship that ends tragically when Draco is forced to take the Dark Mark. Though they still are in love, the war takes a toll on them both, forcing them to decide what really matters in the end.

Status: Meh

Opinion: The relationship between Harry and Draco was not perfect, in fact, it was far away from a healthy relationship at first. The story progressed evenly, but the story felt stilted and forced, like the characters didn’t really believe in what was happening in the story. Yet when the war is over, the story almost completely deviates from what was happening before and all the sudden, the plot points from before didn’t matter to any of the characters. The dilemma that Draco faced after taking the Dark Mark was strong and the moral discussion that followed was good, but the reactions did not seem to add much strength at all.

Pairings: Harry Potter/Draco Malfoy, Ron Weasley/Hermione Granger, Draco Malfoy/Astoria Greengrass

What It Comes Down To

dante-refillable-leather-journal-15Summary: After Harry, Ron, and Hermione are captured by the Death Eaters while on the Horcrux Hunt, Harry is tortured and raped to his breaking point; allowing him to escape with all three of them alive and well. However, Ron and Hermione must now help Harry cope with the aftermaths of the torture while also trying to advance the hunt. While attempting to cope with his mental trauma, Harry begins a relationship with Ron and Hermione that allows him to reconnect with the outside world. After the war ended, they must learn how to navigate a “normal” world with the memories from their time alone.

Status: Fantastic

Opinion: Harry’s mental anguish after the highly detailed torture that he endured was well documented, extrapolated, and created. Even Ron and Hermione’s thoughts and feelings as they attempted to not only deal with their own trauma, but helping with Harry’s as well was well-handled. The relationship between the triad made sense as the story progressed and was not rushed. The story progressed along the same time line as the canonical story, just with the added kidnapping between the necklace and the cup. The end of the story concluded nicely with very little problems and it was hopeful after the long trudge that they all had to endure.

Length: 380.073 words

Pairings:  Harry Potter/Multiple Death Eaters, Harry Potter/Ron Weasley/Hermione Granger, Harry Potter/Draco Malfoy, Harry Potter/Ginny Weasley

Warnings: torture scenes, rape, suicide

The Hog’s Head

Hogs HeadSummary: After the defeat of Voldemort, Harry and Ginny rekindle their relationship; quickly discovering that their relationship seems to be going very easily. Ginny goes back to Hogwarts for her last year, while Harry decides that he would like to run the Hog’s Head in Hogsmeade, just to be closer to her. However, running a business isn’t as easy as Harry believes and as Death Eater related vandalism begins to disrupt his life, Harry starts to wonder if he will ever be just normal. As not only Harry, but also Ginny is targeted, Harry finds himself entering the Auror program just to solve the mystery of who is behind the mysterious happenings in Hogsmeade.

Status: Good

Opinion: This story was well laid out with multiple suspense filled moments that made it seem like a mystery novel. The relationship between Harry and Ginny seemed rushed at first, but as the story progressed and the stressors changed, so too did the strength of the relationship. Their high level of connectiveness was also explain rather nicely in the end as well. The idea of Harry running away from anything regarding academics or the Auror program was a good one that lead to a lot of discussions.

Length: 386.745 words

Pairings: Harry Potter/Ginny Weasley, Ron Weasley/Hermione Granger, Neville Longbottom/OC

Warnings: mild mentions of torture

Never Alone

Ruby-7-1200x915Summary: When the Dursley household is destroyed during the summer, Harry is sent to leave with Severus Snape. He must learn what it means to trust an adult and other people to survive the summer. When Draco Malfoy joins them after his own mother’s death, Harry and him begin to create an unbreakable bond. This is slightly changed when Draco has temporary amnesia after a Death Eater attack. Harry shares all of the information about the Horcruxes with his new found family and even learns the price of self-sacrifice.

Status: Good

Opinion: The story premise was good and well-written, but the story itself was not very memorable. The relationship grew slowly enough to make them realistic, but there were not many moments where the characters were conflicted about anything, which made for a bland story. Ron’s reaction to Harry being friends with Draco and Snape was irrational and sudden, as was his reintroduction to the story. The Horcrux hunting seemed much less dramatic in this story as well, though the added information about Tom Riddle was interesting. There were a several major character deaths that happened that didn’t seem to affect the story all that much as well, which felt anti-climatic with their build-ups.

Length: 397.743 words

Pairings: Draco Malfoy/Harry Potter, Remus Lupin/Severus Snape, Hermione Granger/Ron Weasley

Warnings: Suicide mention, gory deaths

Of Hearts and Heroes

0c211a03743c41baed2ca9a36d11e9caSummary: When Sirius dies, Harry goes into a deep depression that only the reemergence of his Empath American cousin, Adrianna, can bring him out of. While Adriana takes Harry to Japan for training for the summer without anyone else knowing, Ron and Hermione are starting a new relationship based around Ron’s inability to keep the nightmares away unless Hermione is near. When Adrianna shows up with Harry, all four students (including Ginny) must beginning training and learning what they are best at for the sake of defeating Voldemort.

Status: Meh

Opinion: There was a lot left unexplained in this fanfiction, including details of Adrianna’s Empathy and how her “American” magic works. The story was well-written with wonderful characterization, even of the more minor characters, but the plot was lacking. The storyline just ends with no resolution; the reader does not learn anything about the major plotlines, including how the four students end up defeating Voldemort or how Adrianna’s Empathy relates to the larger picture. The interaction between Ron and Hermione was very good and I enjoyed reading about their insecurities and how they overcame them and their story arc was the only one to have any real resolution.

The Price of Valour

Mungos_TraumaSummary: When Harry is struck down by a mysterious magical illness that prevents him from being able to walk and handle magical interference, Draco Malfoy is the one to take over his care. As Harry adjusts to not being able to take care of himself, he must also learn what it means to have someone’s attention solely focused on him. When it comes to light that Ginny Weasley is the one who started the problems, combined with other Dark magic, Harry and Draco must figure out how to resolve the problem and also learn to love each other while under a Healer/patient relationship.

Status: Good

Opinion: This story has a lot of character development in terms of both Harry and Draco. Their relationship does border on obsessive, which is not quite healthy, but the story acknowledges this. The struggle of Harry’s loss of ability to handle magic definitely showed character struggle on both parties, Healer and patient. The breakdown of Ron and Hermione’s relationship was a little lackluster and honestly could have used more extrapolation, but as Harry barely saw either Ron or Hermione, even when they were staying in the same house, it was understandable. Overall, the story was well written, but I personally was not fond of the relationship as a whole.

Length: 406.814 words

Pairings: Harry Potter/Draco Malfoy, Hermione Granger/Ron Weasley, Narcissa Malfoy/Kingsley Shacklebolt

Warnings: Healer/patient relationship, mild medical kinks, paralysis

Peace is a State of Mind

Azkaban-island-uk-coverPart 2 or 3 part series

Summary: After the disastrous end of Voldemort in the first part, Harry is sentenced to live in Azkaban, where he spends his days in an alternate world that he has created in his mind where he gets to live with those who he has lost. Meanwhile, Severus and James have to come to terms with what it means to live with a bond and learn to live outside of it as well. When Lily Potter, as a reaper, manages to convince Harry that his world is not reality, he crash-lands back into a world that hates him. When his attempt to bring back Draco by going back in time fails, he turns to Lucius Malfoy, who double-crosses him.

Status: Meh

Opinion: The creation of Elsewhere was fascinating, as was the stories of the other members of the Dead Block in Azkaban, but the story seemed lacking in terms of how each person was dealing with the events of the war. Not one person seemed to be handling it well and each one had tried to commit suicide of some kind. The relationship building was lacking and seemed very sudden, with unplanned pregnancies as the sole reason that the relationships stayed together.

Length: 114.747 words

Pairings: Harry Potter/Draco Malfoy, Hermione Granger/Severus Snape, James Potter/Narcissa Malfoy

Warnings: Suicide warning, insanity, heavily alcoholism, drug addiction

For the Price of a Soul

ArtPart 1 of 3 part series

Summary: When Harry is beaten to the point of permanent damage by Vernon Dursley, he makes a deal with a demon to have magic to protect himself. He then runs off until he is discovered at the end of what should have been his first year. Starting a year behind with epilepsy in Slytherin, he must navigate the not-friendly world around him. Occasionally a person that goes by the name of “The Assistant” shows up and helps both sides. As voldemort begins to recruit him, Harry must decide who is more important; his family or defeating Voldemort, all the while knowing that the demons are coming for him before he turns 18.

Status: Meh

Opinion: This fanfiction had good bare bones with the exasperated abuse on Harry, but the added element of the time travel and alternate timelines that was introduced with “The Assistant” often muddles up the storyline. The mental state that Harry Evans goes through is understandable and well-laid out, one of the few redeeming qualities. Harry’s love of history and runes throughout the story gave a rather weak character some strengths and personality. The discussions about the alternate timelines were fascinating as they were various. There were several climax scenes where there was so much going on that some very important elements were easy to miss, especially in the final scene. Even after going back and re-reading it, it was hard to decipher.

Length: 410.721 words

Pairings: Harry Potter/Draco Malfoy, Remus Lupin/Sirius Black

Warnings: Very violent, torture, abuse, master/slave

Bound By Duty

51c514306aef395cc0a62798a9b71254Summary: There has been a sexual prophecy that has been told through centuries, stating a Mudblood and three wizards will defeat the Dark Lord with kinky sexual magic. Lily, James, Sirius, and Severus were one couple that had the potential to fulfill the prophecy, but everything seemed to fall apart rather quickly. Now Harry, Hermione, and Ron are busy creating a triad, Draco Malfoy is ordered to befriend them and quickly falls in love with two of the three members. Snape realizes that they have the greatest potential of meeting the requirements and brings the quartet in and facilitates the growth of their relationship. After a failed attempt at a ritual and after Draco is officially Marked, they must learn to trust each other again, right before Voldemort forces their hands.

Status: Fantastic

Opinion: This fanfiction had the potential to be poor handled with its premise, but the polyamory angle was well handled. While the relationship between the trio and Draco had to be forced, it was no surprise they grew to love each other because the potential was there all along. The intrigue of sexual magic, as well as the D/s relationship that was introduced may the story exciting and nothing was ever similar. The psyche for each person, even side characters like Severus, was astounding in its complexity. No one character has simple motivations for what they did, but their emotions were not so complex that their choices did not make sense. The only negative was the Dominant/submissive relationship was not handled well, but that was also addressed in the storyline.

Length: 426.954 words

Pairings: Harry Potter/Hermione Granger/Ron Weasley/Draco Malfoy, Lily Evans/James Potter/Sirius Black/Remus Lupin, Lily Evans/Severus Snape

Warnings: Very sexual, Dominant/submissive relationship, BDSM, Major gore at the climax
